of the big issues is anybody really talking about what to do with the fiscal cliff other than news conferences an the appearances on the floor and the message is there aren't really serious negotiations going back and forth just yet. the critical moments probably later in december when the pressure of the calendar is greater, tamron. >> all right. kelly o'donnell, thank you. joining us now is congressman yarmuth. about a week ago you were on with my colleague and said you were growing more pessimistic about reaching a deal before the back and forth we have seen. how do you feel right now? >> well, i'm still pretty pessimistic about a deal and optimistic to at least avoid the tax part of the cliff. i get the sense that a growing number of republicans are willing to let the senate bill come to the floor here in the house. which would get almost every democratic vote and a fair number of republican votes. as long as speaker boehner doesn't require there be a majority of his majority to pass that bill, i think we can get that done. i have a sense that's kind of a way we're moving. as t

, dropping 7.7%. 6,000 new jobs added. far better than expectations but behind that number is the fiscal cliff. if congress doesn't act jobless unemployment benefits will go from a 72 week maximum down to 27 weeks. could that force a spike in the jobless rate again for 2013? joining us is todd schoenberger of wells fargo, senior economist. i know you were not thrilled with the numbers that came out today but you also have the issue of unemployment benefits and what that does to the economy. are you worried? >> you bet i am worried. if we leap off of the fiscal cliff you are looking at a minimum of 500,000 jobs eliminated and i am not talking low-wage jobs. i am talking about high five digit to six digit jobs. that will impact the overall economy. not just in the united states, also the global economy. you have to start looking at multinationals that trade on wall street. cheryl: some on the democratic side say they want to see unemployment extended for 200013. they argue it will hurt the economy if we don't extend unemployment. do you agree with that assumption? >> i don't think that is

speaker john boehner and senate majority leader harry reid on the fiscal cliff standoff. "the new york times" reporting gop leaders are considering extending tax cuts for the fiscal class to avert the fiscal cliff but if that is the case republicans are staying very tight lipped about it. joining me is senator ben carden from maryland a member of the budget committee and the committee on finance. good to have you here and you have said one thing you want from these talks is to show the markets and to show leaders, that leaders have the situation under control there, in your estimation, how would you say that's going so far? >> well predictability is very important. i think the first step is exactly what leader reid said. if we can get predictability on the taxable income below $250,000, everyone knows that's under current rates and also give us the additional revenue we need on that income above $250,000, it shows us that we are moving towards a balanced way to deal with the fiscal cliff. it would be an incredible lift, i think, to confidence in the markets. >> so with raising revenue
